MILAN, January 21, 2020 – Salini Impregilo joins the world leaders in the fight against climate change as recognised by an annual ranking published by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) of CDP Global, an international non-profit organization that reviews the environmental performance of about 8,400 companies throughout the world. The Group has reached the level of Leadership within the Climate Change programme, rising from a B to an A- rating, according to the results of the latest ranking requested by 525 investors that manage a combined $96 trillion worth of assets.

The result is proof of the effectiveness of the Group’s sustainability strategy, which has taken two lines of action to meet 10 of the Sustainable Development Goals set out by the United Nations. The first is to support clients in the development of infrastructure in strategic sectors like water, renewable energy and sustainable mobility. The second is to contribute to the development of communities where the Group operates. Data from index provider STOXX shows that companies that lead in terms of sustainability also are better market performers. This proves there is link between financial success and corporate transparency and action on the environmental front. The Group’s sustainability strategy is being implemented in parallel with the development of Progetto Italia, the industrial operation aimed at consolidating the construction sector in Italy.

Salini Impregilo has a solid track record in taking action to protect the environment, making it a leading player in the fight against climate change in strategic sectors such as hydroelectricity, sustainable mobility (rail and metro) and eco-construction. The Group is building hydroelectric projects, in which it is a global leader, that will result in the combined production of more than 14,000 megawatts, guaranteeing the supply of cheap, clean energy for tens of millions of people, especially in the Horn of Africa (Ethiopia and the surrounding region), Central Asia (Tajikistan and neighbouring countries) and Australia. The same applies to the plants built by the Group’s Fisia Italimpianti. A world leader in desalination and water treatment, it serves more than 20 million people in the world on a daily basis. The Group is also contributing to the development of projects to improve sustainable mobility, both in urban and suburban settings. Once these projects are completed, they will serve a combined 3.6 million people a day. They include the Red Line North Underground in Doha, Qatar, among the most important projects in the Middle East. There is also the Hurontario Light Rail Transit near Toronto, Canada and the Forrestfield-Airport Link in Perth, Australia.

The quality of the projects built by the Group, already a member of the Global Compact of the United Nations, has seen them receive a number of awards: the Al Bayt Stadium in Qatar, an A* from the Global Sustainability Assessment System; the skytrain bridge and viaduct of the Sydney Metro Northwest, the 2018 Project of the Year and 2018 Global Best Project for the railway sector awards from Engineering News-Record (ENR), as well as the Leading As Built IS recognition from the Infrastructure Sustainability Council of Australia.
